Types of Home Insulation Products and Options

Types of home insulation

There are many different types of home insulation. Ask us which one is best for you!

If you want to get insulation but are not sure where to start, read on. The first step in selecting home insulation products is assessing where to put the insulation. Insulation may be installed in the roof space, under the floor or in the walls. The greatest heat loss (30 – 40%) occurs through the roof, so high levels of ceiling insulation are most beneficial. Heat loss through the floor is about 10 – 15%.

Effective under-floor insulation removes that cold air layer pushing all your heat to the ceiling. If the under-floor insulation material is also a vapour barrier, it will also prevent ground moisture getting into the house. A significant heat loss of 20 – 30% occurs through the walls. Wall insulation is best added when a home is being built.

No-obligation Home Insulation Assessment

A free ‘Home Assessment’ by a qualified Natural Insulation assessor will help you determine what your insulation needs are. Once the assessment is completed, you can choose from the insulation products listed below to best suit your budget and requirements.

Blankets, in the form of rolls, are flexible products made from mineral fibres, including fibreglass, polyester, or rock wool and are often referred to as Batts or biscuits. Loose-fill insulation includes GreenChoice (a natural cellulose product), fibreglass, or rock wool in the form of loose fibres or pellets that are blown to the cavity. It is also great for irregularly shaped areas, and for filling in around obstructions. As well as being used in existing homes, GreenChoice and fibreglass fibres can be sprayed into the open wall cavities of a house under construction.

Rigid Insulation

Rigid Insulation is made from fibrous materials or plastic foams and is produced in board-like forms and moulded pipe coverings. Reflective Insulation Systems are fabricated from aluminium foils with a variety of backings such as Kraft paper, plastic film, polyethylene bubbles, or cardboard. This type of insulation is most effective in reducing downward heat flow.

If it all seems like information overload, the Natural Insulation assessor can advise you on what is best for your home. Call Natural Insulation today to organise a no-obligation Home Assessment.
